The EcoFlow Stream microinverter, recently reviewed by Mighty Gadget, fits this trend, aiming to make solar energy more accessible and help households reduce their reliance on the grid and, consequently, their electricity bills.

The concept of 'plug-in solar', also known as 'Balkonkraftwerk' in Germany, is gaining traction across Europe, particularly in the UK, amidst rising energy prices. The idea is straightforward: connect one or two solar panels to a small microinverter that directly feeds the generated electricity into your home's circuit. The EcoFlow Stream fits perfectly into this category, offering a seemingly simple and low-cost solution.

The EcoFlow Stream microinverter features two inputs for solar panels. The generated electricity can be directly fed into the home mains, stored in a dedicated EcoFlow Stream battery, or wired into a specific circuit. The main appeal lies in the low upfront cost and ease of installation. A complete system, including the microinverter and two large solar panels, could theoretically be assembled for under £500.

In the UK and most of Europe, the Stream's output is legally capped at 800W. This limit, while achievable with a pair of 450W or larger panels, is not a hardware limitation of the device itself. It's important to note that such a system isn't intended to replace a full roof-mounted solar array but rather to cover a home's base load consumption.

Base load is the electricity a property continuously draws, even when appliances are not actively in use. In an efficient home, this can be as low as 100W, but it can reach 500W or more in cases with significant daytime usage, such as home servers, networking systems, or CCTV. It is precisely this constant daytime demand that a microinverter is best suited to offset, as the generated power finds immediate use.

The primary challenge for battery-free plug-in solar systems lies in optimizing savings. If the system produces more electricity than the household is consuming at a given moment, the surplus is fed back into the grid with no direct benefit to the user, especially without a favourable export tariff. Other options include the Stream Ultra (1.92 kWh) and the Stream Max (also 1.92 kWh, often discounted to around £900). These systems, when paired with the microinverter, can cover a significant portion of a small home's daily consumption (5-10 kWh). The payback period for this type of kit is generally faster than traditional solar and battery installations, due to the significantly lower initial cost.

In conclusion, the EcoFlow Stream microinverter presents an interesting option for those looking to reduce their electricity bills through solar energy, provided they have sufficient daytime consumption to absorb a portion of the output. Adding a Stream battery can further optimize savings but increases the initial investment. It represents an accessible solution for starting with domestic solar power generation.
