In the constantly evolving landscape of residential solar energy solutions, "plug & play" batteries are gaining traction, promising simplified installation and increased autonomy. The editorial team at Automobile Propre examined the EcoFlow Stream Ultra X, a robust version of the Stream series, to evaluate its potential, particularly for solarized balconies.

The storage capacities of ready-to-plug-in solar batteries have grown exponentially. What was once limited to 2 kWh a few years ago now reaches 8 kWh for some models installable without professional intervention. The EcoFlow Stream Ultra X positions itself in the mid-range with its 3.84 kWh, a capacity deemed largely sufficient to capture surplus production from a solar installation for an apartment or small house.

The EcoFlow brand, known for its vast ecosystem of products ranging from solar gadgets to power generators, offers with the Stream Ultra X a high-end version of its Stream series. This battery stands out for its superior storage capacity compared to the "Ultra" (1.92 kWh) and "AC Pro" (also 1.92 kWh) models.

On the solar connection side, the Ultra X features four dedicated inputs, each equipped with an independent 500 W MPPT controller, for a total of 2000 W of cumulative solar power. The advantage of an MPPT per input lies in production optimization, even when solar panels have different orientations, a significant asset for complex installations.

The inverter integrated into the Stream Ultra X can deliver up to 1200 W to the home grid via a simple outlet. Although the power is limited to 900 W in France via the smartphone app, it can be easily unlocked to 1200 W by selecting another region. This power is considered sufficient for low-energy-consuming homes, covering lighting, computing, and cycles of certain household appliances.

It is important to note that the plug & play battery market is evolving rapidly. The Stream Ultra X, launched in the summer of 2025, sees its AC output power surpassed by new models reaching 2500 W. The 1200 W limitation may therefore be a drawback for more powerful solar installations or high-consumption homes.

To double the AC output power to 2400 W, it is possible to use the two integrated domestic outlets, each capable of delivering 1200 W. However, this configuration requires the use of an extension cord to directly connect an appliance, which can be inconvenient if the battery is installed outdoors. Nevertheless, this ensures continuous power supply, even in the event of a power outage.

The setup of the Stream Ultra X is particularly easy, confirming its status as a plug & play battery. Despite its weight of 39 kg, side handles facilitate its movement. Installation simply involves connecting the solar panels to the MC4 ports and linking the battery to a domestic outlet with the provided cable. No professional intervention is required.

It is possible to connect multiple batteries from the Stream series together via a parallel cable to increase the total storage capacity. The editorial team tested this configuration by adding a Stream AC Pro and another Stream Ultra, reaching a total of 7.68 kWh. The parallel cables simply clip onto the dedicated ports.

However, unlike some competitors, Stream batteries are not designed to be stacked. The absence of a fastening system between them requires them to be placed side by side, thus occupying more floor space. Furthermore, the Stream Ultra X's all-plastic casing, while aesthetically pleasing, may raise questions about its long-term robustness and durability compared to models with metal enclosures.
